The definitive book on the archetypal Hollywood maverick

Bringing Darkness Instead of Light is the culmination of over 15 years of startlingly candid conversations between John Carpenter and author Michael Doyle. In a wealth of frank, often funny and lively exchanges, we enjoy an unprecedented insight into the famously-private filmmaker’s life and career, rich with amusing anecdotes and jaw-dropping details never previously seen in print. They delve not just into the production of his movies, but also the creative process, and Carpenter’s forthright views on topics as diverse as politics, fear, drugs, and the weird tales of the author H.P. Lovecraft, alongside Carpenter’s frequently colourful opinions on his contemporaries in the film business. This is further supplemented by interviews conducted by Doyle with over a hundred of Carpenter’s closest collaborators, family, colleagues, and friends.

The result is a groundbreaking, boldly unguarded insight into an iconic Hollywood legend, accompanied by numerous previously unpublished photos. Bringing Darkness Instead of Light will delight and enlighten not only John’s worldwide legion of fans, but also everyone with an interest in the horror and science fiction genres, and the ineffable magic of cinema.

    About the Author

Michael Doyle is a journalist, author, and editor whose words have appeared in such publications as Rue Morgue, Fangoria, and Scream. His first book, Larry Cohen: The Stuff of Gods and Monsters (2015), charted the remarkable life and times of the legendary creator of such sociopolitical scarers as the It's Alive trilogy (1974-1987), God Told Me To (1976), and Q – The Winged Serpent (1982). His second book, Hancock on Hancock (2018), chronicled the tumultuous calling of Academy Award-nominated filmmaker John Hancock, whose credits include the poetic horror film Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) and the classic sports tearjerker Bang the Drum Slowly (1973). His third book, Stuart Gordon: Interviews (2022), is a collection of thirty-six interviews covering a period of fifty years in the career of the Re-Animator (1985) director, and was edited for the University Press of Mississippi. Presently hard at work on a massive volume exploring the life and works of Joe Dante (Gremlins), Michael lives somewhere in a misty corner of his beloved Wales with his wife and two children.
